The crochet patchwork cardigan is the easiest crochet project (and time consuming, don’t say I didn’t warn you) for beginners to attempt as it’s only crochet squares. Inspiration & Description & Process
I’ve always been hesitant to take part in the crochet patchwork cardigan, because I didn’t know if I would have the time to be able to make this cardigan. It’s no exaggeration to say it take me 80 hours, across two months or even more while I balance school on the side. I adored the outcome though! It made me motivated to create more cardigans on the Yarnalina blog, so you might be seeing more cardigan patterns coming soon!
The only difficult part in this entire cardigan was sewing the whole thing together, since it took way too much time. Though I would say the checkered pattern could be slightly difficult for beginners to get a hang of, but it gets easier through time.
It was a super mindless project to simply create square after square, which is such a nice plus. I prefer projects that contain easier stitches that I can crochet or knit while watching some Youtube videos to relax.

Creating more handmade pieces for my closet and for the Yarnalina blog is something I’ve been trying to do more ever since receiving many comments and likes for the fan favorite pattern: crochet cropped sweater vest. And ever since then I’ve been planning out more and more clothing pieces for the blog, and they’re soon to make an appearance on both my Youtube channel and blog!
I had made this crochet cardigan into a small challenge on the Yarnalina youtube channel as how much I can crochet in an hour, and I finishes around 2.5 squares in an hour without any distractions. I had also talked about how I picked the brown color as someone who prefer neutral colors in her closet instead of the super bright colors of the J.W. knit cardigan.
You could try making this cardigan in any color really, patchwork cardigans have a lot of possibility in colors and style haha! You could skip the whole alteration that I added to the neckline if you’d like and stick with plain squares, it still works just fine.

Your yarn usage depends on how tight your stitches are or how loose they are, so you might end up using more or less yarn than I did. Or you picked another yarn to work with, then the yardage you’d need will no doubt be different. But you can definitely use the extra yardages to increase the body panel width or sleeves by a handful of rows to create a more oversized look!

Crochet Brown Patchwork Cardigan
Patches
Ch28(32,36) with a 5mm crochet hook
R1: Working into the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc across (27, 31, 35)
R2 – R20(25,30): Ch2, turn your work, hdc across (27, 31, 35)
Cut, tie it off, and leave a small yarn tail.
NOTE: Depending on your size or preference, you should adjust the number of rows or chains of your squares
XS, S, M: ch28 with 20 rows
L, XL, 2XL: ch32 with 25 rows
3XL, 4XL, 5XL: ch36 with 30 rows
Repeat for a total of 28 (around 32 or 36) squares
*You could have more or less than my total number of squares, we all have different body types and maybe different yarns, so play with the number of squares)

Patch 1: x2
Ch28(32,36) with a 5mm crochet hook
R1: Working into the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc across (27, 31, 35)
R2 – R13(18, 23): Ch2, turn your work, hdc across (27, 31, 35)
R14 (19,24): Ch2, turn your work, skip first st, work into the next and hdc across (26, 30, 34)
R15 (20, 25): Ch2, turn your work, hdc across (26, 30, 34)
Repeat R14-R15 till your total 20 (25, 30) rows
*You should have your decreases all on one side of the square*
Patch 2: x2
Ch26 (30, 34) with a 5mm crochet hook
R1: Work into the 2nd chain from your hook, hdc across (25, 29, 33)
R2 – R12(17, 22): Ch2, turn your work, skip first st, work into the next and hdc across

In buff with a 4mm crochet hook, ch 13(15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, 29, 32)

Cut, tie it off, and leave a long yarn tail to sew it on later.
Neck Collar
In cafe latte with a 5mm crochet hook, ch 8(10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24)
R1: working into the third chain from your hook, hdc across (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22)
R2 – R138(140, 142, 144, 146, 148, 150, 152, 154): Ch2, turn your work, blhdc across (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22)
Cut, tie it off, and leave a long yarn tail to sew it on later.
Assembly
Line up the patches, I did 4 patches as the length and 3 patches as the width as the back panel. Then I had the four different patches line up in the 1st and 2nd patches of the 2nd and 3rd column of the front panel.
Fold and sew the sleeves (aka four patches) together with the sleeve cuffs, then sew it on to the armholes.
Sew the bottom ribbing and neck collar on.
